Rossin Professor in the department of civil and environmental engineering (CEE) and in the department of chemical engineering (ChE) at Lehigh University, Pennsylvania. Professor SenGupta received his B.S. degree in chemical engineering from Jadavpur University, Kolkata and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in environmental engineering from the University of Houston, Texas. Professor SenGupta is internationally recognized for his seminal contribution in advancing the field of ion exchange science and technology and applying it toward mitigating environmental hazards in both developed and developing world. He currently has six US patents for his inventions and three more are pending. He has graduated 12 PhDs and has 75 peer-reviewed journal publications. Professor SenGupta's research received awards from the American Chemical Society (ACS), American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), UNESCO and the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) among others.
Professor SenGupta's Fulbright-Nehru research is titled as "Mitigation of Arsenic and Fluoride Crisis in Groundwater in India: A Sustainable Approach". The research focuses primarily on two aspects: 1) Development of re-generable arsenic- and fluoride-selective polymer-based adsorbent using indigenous materials so that the cost of water treatment in affected villages can be significantly reduced; 2) Identifying two or three villages suffering from fluoride- and arsenic-contaminated groundwater in the state of Karnataka and applying sustainable treatment systems. Professor SenGupta also plans to deliver lectures in different academic institutions and initiate collaborative activity pertaining to water-related problems
